Creature Mark

The first objective was to create a black and white, two-dimensional interpretation of a chosen creature. An elevated focus was to be placed on form, simplifying without sacrificing quality, and systematic arrangements. Research on what makes the selected creature unique was also factored into designing the final mark.
The second objective was to develop a system through an understanding of the fibonacci sequence. Within the system, the completed creature mark, a phrase related to the creature, and additional elements would be added. The final result would include harmony due to strong proportional relationships.

Research

Culturally, specifically in Japan, the koi fish has a long history as a respected symbol. It is portrayed as an animal that holds a high level of elegance. To emulate the koi fish's elegance, I formed the creature mark almost entirely out of ellipses. An ellipse, like a koi fish, follows a continuous smooth flow. In nature, koi fish glide through water with high energy. I associate high energy with movement, so visually communicating movement was crucial. My visual goal was to move the viewer’s eye from pattern to pattern down to the tail which would direct them back to the top.
